What a Shopify Plus build costs in 2026 (and what Hydrogen actually adds)
In 2026 a Shopify Plus theme launch runs $25,000–$80,000. A custom Plus commerce system, the thing most $5M–$50M brands actually need, runs $150,000–$500,000+. A Hydrogen storefront sits at $200,000–$400,000+ and is a different product, not a Plus add-on. The Plus plan itself is $2,300–$2,500 a month. Apps, media, and data migration are extra.

Key takeaways
- $25k–$80k theme Plus, 8–12 weeks. Fine when the brand can live inside a theme.
- Custom Plus (Online Store 2.0 + Functions + checkout): $150k–$500k+. Propeller publishes $250k–$500k+.
- Hydrogen: $200k–$400k+ to build, then a permanent engineering line. Oxygen hosting is not the cost.
- Most brands that “need Hydrogen” need a faster Liquid theme and fewer apps.
- Migrations sit on top of the build: $75k–$200k depending on SKUs, URLs, and integrations.
- After launch you still need a retainer. Builds rot without one.
“Shopify Plus build” is three products: a Plus-configured theme, a custom Liquid system with Checkout Extensibility, and a Hydrogen storefront.
Shopify Plus build cost in 2026, at a glance
- Theme + Plus plan config: $25k–$80k market. Rarely Propeller’s job. 8–12 weeks. Catalog is simple; theme can carry the brand.
- Custom Plus, Liquid / OS 2.0: $150k–$350k market; Propeller $250k–$500k+. 6–9 months. $5M–$50M brands where checkout and merchandising are the product.
- Plus + complex integrations / multi-market: $300k–$700k+ market; Propeller $250k–$500k+ scoped up. 7–12 months. B2B, Markets, ERP, multiple storefronts.
- Hydrogen / headless Plus: $80k–$400k+ market (wide); Propeller $200k–$400k+. 6–12 months. When Liquid cannot express the experience and revenue pays for the engineers.
- Platform migration onto Plus: $50k–$250k market; Propeller $75k–$200k. 3–9 months. Magento, SFCC, BigCommerce, WooCommerce.
The wide Hydrogen column is the tell. A $25k “Hydrogen storefront” and a $400k Hydrogen system are both for sale in 2026. They share a repo name. They do not share a risk profile.
What the Plus plan costs (this is not the build)
Shopify Plus is a licence. In 2026 it is about $2,300/month on a three-year term or $2,500/month on a one-year term, then a revenue-based platform fee at high volume.
You still pay payment processing, apps ($500–$4,000/month is common on Plus), Markets / expansion stores as the footprint grows, and the agency or the team that makes the licence do anything.
Plus is cheaper than a legacy enterprise platform. It is not cheaper than Advanced Shopify ($399/month) unless the architecture, checkout, Functions, B2B, API limits, multi-store, is worth the jump.
If standard Shopify still fits, stay on it. Plus is not a footer badge.
The three products hidden inside “we need a Plus build”
1. Theme Plus, $25k–$80k. A premium theme, Plus features switched on, checkout mostly stock, a few sections, apps for the rest. Honest use: a brand that outgrew Advanced on volume or B2B flags, not on experience. This quote pollutes comparison tabs. It is a real product. It is not what a Santa Monica studio means by a Plus build.
2. Custom Plus, $150k–$500k+. Online Store 2.0 as architecture, not a theme skin. The fee pays for UX and design across core templates, theme architecture merchandisers can still edit, Checkout Extensibility, Shopify Functions, catalog model, mobile speed, analytics and CAPI, QA against real campaigns, launch, redirects if URLs move, and 30–90 days of hypercare.
This is Propeller’s default Plus job. Published range: $250k–$500k+. Timeline: 6–9 months. It is priced there because the designer who shapes checkout stays on to test it. Ticket-queue Plus builds are cheaper. They also leave you hiring a CRO agency the week after go-live.
3. Hydrogen, $200k–$400k+. A React storefront (Hydrogen + Remix) talking to Shopify through APIs, usually on Oxygen. You own rendering, routing, a large share of SEO, and every app that used to be a theme embed. Hydrogen is not “Plus, but faster.” Plus checkout still lives on Shopify’s checkout. Hydrogen replaces the storefront in front of it.

What a custom Plus build includes at each scope
- Core custom Plus ($150k–$250k): design system, OS 2.0 theme, core templates, checkout branding, basic Functions, speed pass, CAPI, QA, launch.
- Conversion Plus ($250k–$400k): core plus PDP architecture, collection merchandising, test-ready templates, lifecycle hooks, landing system for paid.
- System Plus ($400k–$500k+): conversion Plus plus Markets, B2B company accounts, subscriptions, ERP/OMS, custom apps.
Propeller work lives in the second and third rows. Treat a $60k “custom Plus” proposal as a theme with extra slides until the list above is in writing.
Hydrogen build cost, honestly
Hydrogen the framework is free. Oxygen hosting on a paid Shopify plan is free. That sentence has sold a lot of bad projects.
What you pay for: a front-end that is now software, design that becomes a component library, Storefront API and Customer Account API, cart, search, filters, a CMS if marketers edit anything (Sanity, Storyblok, Contentful), rebuilding theme-app features, SEO you own, performance you own, and a team that can ship Remix after the agency leaves.
- Starter / demo-grade Hydrogen: $10k–$40k build, $2k–$5k/mo ongoing. A repo. Not a brand.
- Single-market production: $80k–$200k build, $5k–$15k/mo. Usable storefront, thin merchandising.
- Brand-grade Hydrogen: $200k–$400k+ build, $10k–$25k/mo. Propeller’s published band.
- Multi-market + CMS + ERP: $400k–$800k+ build, $15k–$40k/mo. A product organisation, not a website.
Year-one cost is the build plus the engineers. A $250k Hydrogen launch with $12k/month of upkeep is a $394k first year before apps and media. Compare that to a $250k Liquid Plus build with a $5k–$15k retainer. Hydrogen has to win on revenue, not on architecture slides.
When Hydrogen is worth it: the experience cannot be expressed in OS 2.0 without fighting the platform every week; personalisation, configuration, or content models are the product; you will fund senior React capacity after launch; and the conversion or merchandising lift pays the extra engineering inside a year.
When it is theatre: “we want it to feel like a tech company”; Core Web Vitals are bad because of apps and image weight, not Liquid; no one can approve a component without a committee; the brief is a theme rebuild with a Hydrogen logo; revenue is under ~$5M and the constraint is still PDP clarity or Klaviyo.
Propeller defaults to Liquid. Hydrogen is the exception that has to earn the complexity. When headless is worth it is the longer version of that sentence. For a dedicated Hydrogen cost page, see Hydrogen build cost.
Hydrogen vs custom Plus, same brand
- Custom Plus (Liquid / OS 2.0): Shopify + your theme maintain the storefront; app ecosystem works; marketer editing via theme editor; build $150k–$500k+; ongoing $5k–$15k retainer typical. Best default almost always.
- Hydrogen: you maintain the storefront; many apps become builds; CMS or a developer for edits; build $200k–$400k+; ongoing $10k–$25k+ and a React seat. When Liquid is the constraint.
If the meeting cannot name the Liquid constraint in one sentence, do not green-light Hydrogen.
What moves a Plus or Hydrogen quote
- Templates. Home, collection, PDP, cart, account, content, landing, quiz, club, gift. Each unique template is design + engineering + QA.
- Catalog. 200 SKUs with clean metafields is not 8,000 SKUs with empty option names.
- Checkout. Branding is cheap. Custom fields, Functions, subscriptions, and B2B terms are not.
- Markets. One country is a store. Five countries is a programme.
- Integrations. ERP, OMS, PIM, 3PL, subscriptions, loyalty, search. Every API is a product.
- Migration. URL map, 301s, customers, orders, reviews, SEO equity. See Shopify migration cost.
- Content and photography. Not in the build number unless it says so.
- App subtraction. Replacing eight apps with two custom features can be the whole second month.
- Who stays after launch. A build with no retainer is how Plus stores look expensive in month four.
Migration cost on top of the build
A Plus build on a new catalogue is one number. Moving Magento, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, or a brittle Shopify theme onto Plus is another.
Propeller publishes migrations at $75k–$200k, driven by SKUs, URL history, customers/orders, reviews and content, integrations, and SEO. The migration fee and the rebuild fee should be separate lines. Mixed numbers hide the risk.
Timeline, if nobody is lying
- Theme Plus: 8–12 weeks
- Custom Plus: 6–9 months
- Hydrogen: 6–12 months
- Plus + dirty migration: add 6–12 weeks
Twelve-week custom Plus builds exist. They cut QA, content, and the week the catalog meets the design. The cost shows up in November.
Year-one math, so the board sees one number
Illustrative. Not a quote. Custom Plus mid-market DTC year one before media and processing: Plus licence ~$28k–$30k, custom build $250k–$400k, apps $6k–$36k, retainer from launch (6 months) $30k–$90k. Total roughly $315k–$555k.
Hydrogen, same brand: Plus licence ~$28k–$30k, Hydrogen build $200k–$400k, CMS + tooling $6k–$24k, engineering / retainer $60k–$180k. Total roughly $295k–$635k.
Hydrogen only wins this table if the storefront prints more than Liquid would have. “It is more modern” is not a line item.
How to read a Plus or Hydrogen proposal
Eight lines. Same test as the retainer guide.
- Which of the three products is this. Theme, custom Plus, or Hydrogen. Named.
- What is out. Photography, content load, media, apps, ERP licences, extra markets.
- Catalog assumptions. SKU count, metafields, languages.
- Checkout scope. Branding vs Functions vs B2B vs subscriptions.
- Who writes code that can break checkout.
- SEO and redirect plan, if anything moves.
- Hypercare. 30, 60, or 90 days, in writing.
- What month four costs if you keep them, and if you do not.
If the proposal cannot say “this is not Hydrogen” or “this is Hydrogen, and here is the Liquid constraint,” it is not ready for a signature.
What Propeller publishes
Santa Monica Shopify and Plus studio. Numbers already on the site: standard Shopify builds $100k–$150k (4–6 months), Shopify Plus implementations $250k–$500k+ (6–9 months), Hydrogen storefronts $200k–$400k+ (6–12 months), migrations $75k–$200k, partnerships from $5,000/month, 90-day engagements from $15,000.
We recommend Plus when architecture requires it, not when a peer’s footer does. We recommend Hydrogen when Liquid is the constraint and the revenue pays for the engineers. If neither is true, we will say so on the Growth Review and point you at who is.

Questions
How much does a Shopify Plus build cost in 2026?
A Shopify Plus theme launch typically costs $25,000–$80,000. A custom Plus commerce system costs $150,000–$500,000+. Propeller publishes $250,000–$500,000+ for custom Plus implementations. The Shopify Plus plan is separate at about $2,300–$2,500 per month.
How much does a Shopify Hydrogen build cost?
A brand-grade Shopify Hydrogen storefront typically costs $200,000–$400,000+ to build, plus ongoing engineering of $10,000–$25,000 or more per month. Starter Hydrogen projects are quoted much lower and are a different product. The Hydrogen framework and Oxygen hosting are free; the project is not.
Is Hydrogen included in a Shopify Plus build?
No. Shopify Plus is the platform. Hydrogen is an optional React storefront architecture that can sit in front of Plus. Checkout remains Shopify hosted. They should be budgeted as separate lines.
Why do Shopify Plus build quotes range from $40,000 to $400,000?
The quotes describe different products. A $40,000 Plus build is usually a premium theme with Plus features configured. A $400,000 Plus build is a custom commerce system: design, checkout extensibility, catalog architecture, integrations, QA, and launch.
Do you need Shopify Plus to use Hydrogen?
No. Hydrogen can run on other paid Shopify plans. Most production Hydrogen builds still use Plus because checkout extensibility, Shopify Functions, and API limits appear in the same brief.
When is Shopify Hydrogen worth the extra cost?
When Online Store 2.0 cannot express the experience, the brand will fund senior React capacity after launch, and the conversion or merchandising lift pays for the extra engineering. Most brands that think they need Hydrogen need a faster Liquid theme and fewer apps.
Is Plus just more expensive Shopify?
No. Plus is architecture: Checkout Extensibility, Functions, B2B company accounts, multi-store tooling, higher API limits. If you do not need those, Advanced Shopify is the cheaper honest choice.
How long does a Plus or Hydrogen project take?
Custom Plus: 6–9 months. Hydrogen: 6–12 months. Theme Plus can be a quarter. Faster custom dates usually mean unpaid debt after go-live.
Should we rebuild on Liquid or go Hydrogen?
Liquid, unless you can name the thing OS 2.0 cannot do and fund the team that will own Remix after launch. Speed problems are usually apps and images, not Liquid.
